This was our final assignment in Literature class for PS1. The goal of this assignment was to create three pieces of writing in which we were to argue in favor of the importance of literacy in the 21st century classroom.
The first part required us to write a letter to parents of our students outlining the importance of literacy in our ever changing world.
For the second portion of the assignment we were placed in the position of applying for a teaching job. The goal was to explain to your new employer how you valued literacy and the ways in which you planned to teach it in your classroom. For this part of the assignment a decided to hold a "mock interview", cataloging the dialogue that I imagined would take place in such a situation. Through this dialogue I was able to express the types of plans that I have for literacy in my own classroom one day and answer the questions posed by the assignment in a fairly original fashion.
The third and final part of the assignment required us to produce a piece of writing that displayed how we as teachers were prepared to deal with a diverse classroom. Canada is among the most multicultural countries in the world and with that comes children from differing backgrounds with differing opinions on the importance of literacy. I chose to write a letter to my students promising that no student would be left behind and that we would all move at our own pace, reading things that interested and challenged us.
