Grade Level: 6
Brief description of activity:
· The site is set up in the form of the game show Jeopardy. The questions are built in tot the template and the answers are just one click away. Teachers may choose how many teams they wish to participate and the scoring system is also built into the site. Questions range in topics and difficulty and the point system reflects the difficulty of the question. Harder questions are worth more points and easier questions are worth fewer. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.
General Learning Outcome 6.2: Students will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the democratic principles exemplified by Ancient Athens and the Iroquois Confederacy.
Specific Learning Outcomes 6.2.3: Analyze the structure and functions of the democratic system in ancient Athens by exploring and reflecting upon the following questions and issues:
• How was the government of ancient Athens structured? (PADM)
• How did the structure of the government in ancient Athens provide opportunities for citizens to participate in decision making? (C, PADM)
• How did identity, status and class structure impact citizenship in ancient Athens? (C, I)
• How did the social structure of ancient Athens impact its political structure? (CC, PADM)
Relevant ICT outcomes:
· envisioning and articulating ways that technology can be used in teaching and learning
· establishing digital citizenship
Rationale for computer integration: Technology enhances the review process because it provides an interactive way for students to test their knowledge. The activity provides an opportunity for students of all learning styles to be engaged. Auditory, visual and kinesthetic learners can be included with an appropriate use of technology.
Search strategies employed: the Google search engine with the key words, "grade 6 social studies" "ancient athens" "democracy" –test. This narrowed down my search to around 251 hits. A small enough number that I was able to find several useful links.
